Joel came home in tenth place in a difficult second FIA F3 European Championship race of the weekend at Norisring.
Starting from tenth on the grid, Joel sat ninth for the majority of a largely static race, chasing on the heels of Guan Yu Zhou but unable to pass the Chinese Ferrari Formula 1 junior.
Instead, Joel came under pressure from Zhou’s Prema Powerteam colleague Callum Ilott in the closing stages, with the Briton eventually demoting Joel to tenth (and a single championship point) a few laps from home.
Lando Norris won from Jake Hughes in a British 1-2, while Maximilian Günther – who celebrates his 20th birthday today – took third.
Joel remains second overall in the championship standings, now 22 points behind Günther.
Next session: Race 3, 14.50 local time (GMT+02:00).
Comment, Joel:
“A tough one. I made an OK start, but then I ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time in Turn 1 and got passed by a couple of cars on the outside, which was the better line through there. After that, I was stuck behind Guan Yu Zhou for much of the race, but didn’t really have the pace to overtake. The car wasn’t the way I want it to be in this race, and we now need to sit down and revert to what we had in Race 1. That was better.”
