Joel was embroiled in a battling Sunday race as the Norisring DTM weekend came to a close this afternoon, featuring heavily during an entertaining hour of racing that eventually yielded no points as he finished 12th.
Starting eighth, Joel went for the strategy of pitting already on the opening lap, but struggled to get heat into his tyres on the out-lap that followed and frustratingly lost track position to those pitting just a few tours later.
That would set the tone for much of the remainder of the race, with Joel stuck in traffic and battling the cars around him.
He tried hard to get past BMW team-mate Timo Glock – one of those to leapfrog him during the early pit stop phases – for many laps, but couldn’t make it past and instead fell into the clutches of Gary Paffett in the second half of the race.
Joel put up a strong defense to fend off the championship leader all the way to the line, although in battling for 12th, it ultimately wasn’t enough to add to his points tally.
Marco Wittmann won the race on his and BMW’s home soil.
Further reaction to follow in a weekend round-up press release.
