Joel enjoyed a highly promising outing in second free practice for the Hockenheim DTM opener, going fifth fastest as BMW came to the fore ahead of qualifying.
Setting a time of 1m32.820s around the German Grand Prix track, Joel wound up just 0.386s adrift of the ultimate pace set by BMW stablemate Timo Glock, as he continued to gain experience aboard his BMW M4 DTM.
Adding further promise to the cause, Joel lapped just a tenth off double DTM champion Marco Wittmann – the winner of the final race at Hockenheim last season – to end up third among the BMW contingent.
Fellow DTM rookies Philipp Eng (BMW) and Robin Frijns (Audi) were 17th and 18th.
Coming up next is the hotly anticipated first qualifying battle of the season, with the grid for this afternoon’s Race 1 set to be formed at 11.25 local time.
