Joel Eriksson will make his debut in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship next month, racing for DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT in Mexico’s Puebla E-Prix.
Eriksson will stand in for the team’s regular driver, Nico Müller, for the June 19-20 double-header event due to conflicting commitments for the Swiss, joining ex-Formula 3 team-mate Sérgio Sette Câmara in the pair of PENSKE EV-5s.
“To race in Formula E has always been a dream since the championship started and to finally be given the chance feels kind of unreal,” says Joel Eriksson. “There’s a lot of work ahead of us, but I have a great team behind me, so I know they will do all they can to make me as prepared as possible before arriving in Mexico.”
Eriksson has also been appointed as the team’s official Reserve Driver for the remainder of Season 7, extending a role he first held in Season 6.
“After a strong collaboration with Dragon last season, I’m more than happy and very honored to continue what we’ve started together,” Joel Eriksson continues. “I will do my absolute best to help the team as much as possible and support the drivers between races. With the motivated personnel in Silverstone and Los Angeles, and the new Bosch alliance, we have the keys to achieve great results. I’m super motivated to get back to work.”
When he lines up on the grid in Puebla – a new venue on the Formula E calendar for this season – 22-year-old Eriksson will become only the second Swedish driver to race in the all-electric championship since its inception, and the first in its world championship era.
“It will be challenging as I only have limited mileage in this car, but my main goal is to make the best out of it and gain as much experience as I can,” Eriksson concludes. “I do believe that scoring points in the races is absolutely possible if I execute well. I will give it my all to achieve this goal.”
Joel Eriksson will drive the #6 DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT car in the Puebla E-Prix.
“I am pleased to welcome Joel back to the team,” says Jay Penske, Owner and Team Principal of DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT. “He is a valuable resource for the organization and has tremendous potential to apply his race craft to the unique demands of Formula E and deliver results for the team on track in Puebla and behind the scenes throughout the rest of the season. I look forward to our first race together.”
