Joel brought home two championship points in the second and final race of the Lausitzring DTM round, finishing ninth to add to his Hockenheim tally.
The race got off to a good start for Joel, who went from seventh on the grid to sixth with an around-the-outside move on yesterday’s winner Edoardo Mortara (Mercedes) in the first sequence of corners.
Joel then overtook Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) for fifth a few laps later, before putting pressure on BMW team-mates Marco Wittmann and Philipp Eng in a convincing beginning to the race.
A series of events would derail Joel’s afternoon shortly afterwards, however, as first an aggressive attack from the recovering Mortara caused Joel to drop three places – down to eighth – and then a crammed pit stop did little to help the cause.
Mortara was subsequently requested by the stewards to hand back the position, but the move had already cost Joel an extra two places that were never recovered.
The race also contained a near-miss with Lucas Auer (Mercedes) which very nearly put Joel in the wall.
As it was, Joel ultimately brought his BMW home in ninth for a decent reward following a hard day’s job.
Gary Paffett claimed victory ahead of Wittmann – whom Joel had been running in close pursuit during the first stint – and Pascal Wehrlein (Mercedes).
