Joel Eriksson returns to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for a history-making weekend in London, where the all-electric cars will do battle on an innovative indoor/outdoor track.
Eriksson will line up once again for DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT in the penultimate round of the 2020-21 campaign, staged in the historic docklands of the British capital.
Hosting this weekend’s races is the ExCeL exhibition centre, where a temporary 2.2 km circuit has been laid out using both the inside and outside of the venue – a first in international motor racing.
Half the track – from Turn 21 to Turn 8, including the start/finish area – is located indoors, while the rest of the lap (Turn 9 to Turn 20) sees the field race on the outside perimeter roads. The drivers will enter and exit the building via a pair of ramps.
“It’s great to be back for another round in the championship,” says Joel Eriksson. “The London E-Prix is yet another innovative event by Formula E. Racing at an indoors/outdoors track is not something that ever crossed my mind, but because we’re an electric, non-combustion series obviously it’s fully possible to do. It will be cool with the different levels of lighting, coming in and out of the building, and what if it rains outside? It’s a really exciting prospect and I’m keen to try it out!”
The London E-Prix will mark Joel Eriksson’s third Formula E round. The Swede made his debut at the Puebla E-Prix in Mexico last month, and recently contested the New York City E-Prix (USA) a fortnight ago.
London marks yet another double-header for the championship, with two races set to play out on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
