Joel has qualified in 11th place for Saturday’s DTM race at the Lausitzring, where he is set to start ahead of the likes of reigning champion René Rast and Hockenheim race winner Gary Paffett.
In yet another demonstration of the strength-in-depth of the DTM field, several of the established stars of the series were left far down the order while others delivered surprise performances. Joel found himself locked in a close midfield scrap, eventually taking 11th after lapping a mere 0.001s slower than ex-champion Mike Rockenfeller in tenth.
Up front, Mercedes’ Lucas Auer snatched pole position on his final flying lap. Auer’s time proved 0.623s quicker than Joel’s.
Race 1 begins at 13.30 local time this afternoon, with Joel right in the battle for a points-paying top ten result.
