Joel has had his second-fastest lap from Saturday’s qualifying session at Monza reinstated, meaning he will start both of Sunday’s two FIA F3 European Championship races from pole position.
The F3 field faced a long wait following the end of second qualifying as stewards investigated a host of track limits infringements.
Joel had topped the session outright and hence sealed provisional pole for Race 2, but had his second-fastest lap –which counts for the Race 3 grid – originally cancelled as track marshals adjudged him to have run wide on the exit of the Parabolica.
That left him down in fifth for Race 3, but Joel remained confident he had never been outside track limits in the session – and has now been proved correct after stewards reinstated the lap in question following detailed on-board analysis that freed him of any wrongdoing.
With the results now finally confirmed, that means Joel will start both of Sunday’s two races from pole position, with championship co-leader Lando Norris sharing the front row on both occasions.
Next session: Race 2, 11.00 local time (GMT+02:00) tomorrow (Sunday).
Comment, Joel:
“It’s been a long wait, but it was definitely worth it! I always felt that I was within the limits throughout the session, so I’m glad that the stewards have had a real look into everything and come to this conclusion. This leaves us in the best possible position for the final two races and while it will still be difficult to keep everyone behind, that’s obviously going to be the target.”
