Joel Eriksson completed both races of the Puebla E-Prix double-header to rack up treasured experience on a promising ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut in Mexico this weekend.
Standing in for regular Nico Müller at DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT in the middle of the season, Eriksson faced a steep learning curve but quickly got to grips with his new environment, eventually leading the team’s two-car charge with 15th place in Sunday’s concluding Race 2.
That followed a 17th-place finish in Saturday’s first encounter, where Eriksson also convincingly delivered the seventh fastest lap of the race within the 24-strong world championship field.
“I have learned so much this weekend, just like I expected to on my debut in Formula E,” says Joel Eriksson. “It’s such a different category to anything I’ve done before, but I’ve taken it step by step and improved with every session. From the flat-out qualifying laps to managing the energy and tyres in the races, and factoring in stuff like Attack Mode and strategy, it’s been one of the steepest learning curves of my career – but I’m pleased with how it went.
“The pace has been solid, I think especially given the circumstances, and while we had a few small problems here and there along the way, overall it’s been largely positive. The team seems happy with my performance as well, which is the main thing of course.
“I have had to learn quick, but I enjoyed it and it’s been a lot of fun. I’m extremely thankful to the team for allowing me this opportunity and it’s been a pleasure working with the guys over a full race weekend.”
Victory at Puebla went to Lucas di Grassi (Audi, Race 1) and Edoardo Mortara (Venturi, Race 2).
