Joel finishes first DTM race 1.5s from the points

Joel has finished his maiden DTM race in 12th place, having run in the points heading into the final five laps of a gripping 2018 season-opener at Hockenheim.

From tenth on the grid following a convincing qualifying performance, Joel unfortunately stalled at the start, dropping down to 15th place after quickly managing to restart his BMW M4 DTM.

Stuck in traffic and fighting understeer during a less-than-ideal opening stint, Joel’s race came alive following the fitting of new tyres at the compulsory pit stop, allowing him to climb all the way back up to ninth place after a series of overtakes.

On lap 32 of 36, Joel was running tenth and looking set for points on his DTM debut. On rapidly degrading tyres, however, he eventually lost out to Audi duo René Rast and Loic Duval in the closing stages, eventually finishing 12th behind BMW team-mate Marco Wittmann (who also had to yield for the Audis) in 11th.

Joel came home just 1.5 second behind tenth-placed Duval in the final point-paying position. In doing so, he continued the trend from practice and qualifying to slot in as the leading rookie, with fellow 2018 newcomers Philipp Eng and Robin Frijns finishing 16th and 18th respectively.

The race was won by Gary Paffett, who led home a 1-2 for Mercedes ahead of Lucas Auer. Timo Glock, the top BMW, completed the podium.
